After having time to digest what I initially perceived to be a poor attempt at a prank or some type of sick joke, it’s time to analyze the Tebow deal a little bit:
From A Football Perspective:
This move had Tony Sparano written all over it, the man who made the “Wildcat” famous and then infamous has undoubtedly wanted to get his hands on this guy since the day he came into the NFL. Tebow is the quintessential Wildcat quarterback, as he is extremely limited as a passer but is a dangerous runner and has some throwing ability. However, in a year where the Jets looked as though they would forgo the flashy free agent signings the Tannenbaum regime has become synonymous with and build through the draft it is somewhat confusing to see why they would be willing to trade away two draft picks and be willing to pay a backup significant money. The Jets still have an number of needs to address more important than a backup quarterback who has trouble performing the fundamental duties of a quarterback.
Many of the talking heads who support the deal see it as being beneficial with the idea that it will light a fire under Sanchez but by the same token, it will create political issues within the organization. Sanchez’s margin for error has become even more narrow, if he has one bad game fans and teammates alike will be calling for Tebow. Touchdown Jesus also must be under the impression that he has a chance to win the job because he had the option of going to the Jaguars whose quarterback situation is very much up in the air. From an organizational standpoint, they are sending mixed messages to Sanchez, first showing confidence in him by extending his contract and now this.
You will likely see Tebow in some version of the Wildcat, running option type plays and using his legs to create positive yardage. But again, anytime Sanchez comes off the field the question will come up as to Tebow’s role. Peyton Manning allegedly spurned the Jets because of the “circus like atmosphere,” but by signing with the Broncos he inadvertently added a few more rings to said circus. Sure there are some obvious advantages to having Tebow but they are limited as opposed to the potential fallout that his presence could create.
From A Fan’s Perspective:
As with any polarizing figure whether it be in sports or otherwise there will be those who love and those who hate time Tebow. I think that there is and will continue to be a growing dichotomy between Jets fans who support Tebow and those who oppose the move. Obviously the Sanchez believers/apologists are likely outraged by this move on the other hand those who have seemingly lost faith in the Sanchize tend to be Tebow supporters.
From where I’m sitting, it just dumbfounds me that the Jets even considered this as an option there are more blatant needs than polarizing back-up quarterback. Such as right tackle, the position to which most of the Jets offensive woes in 2011 can be attributed to. If this is their alternative solution to solidifying the line, the Jets think tank might want to go back to the drawing board. We saw what can happen when there are blatant weakness in your offensive line (Wayne Hunter), teams will exploit it and it makes executing an offensive game plan exponentially more difficult.
Another thing the Tebow move did was that it overshadowed the Laron Landry signing, which is a low-risk, high-reward proposition that made a lot of sense considering it was an actual need. Now the Jets are short a fourth round draft pick with wholes that still need to be filled. To me this has the makings of a good old fashioned quarterback controversy but there really should be no controversy, if last year showed us anything it’s that Tim Tebow can’t play in a conventional pro-style offense and life outside the AFC West could be a harsh reality for young Mr. Tebow. But then again, what do I know?

Excellent post.
Upside to acquiring Tebow: too little.
Potential for disaster (splitting the team, destroying Mark Sanchez as the Jets quarterback of the future): too much.

I really don’t get this move. I like the Tanny/Rex combo but for the first time, I feel like this organization is heading in the wrong direction. (we can talk about previous bad moves by the front office before this) We needed that 4th round pick. Look at what the Jets have done in the past with 4th rounders.
As for Sanchez, I think we would have found out about him this year with Tebow behind him or not. The wildcat is 3 yrs ago. We need a RT, OLB, WR, Blocking T/E, Safety,ILB and O-line help.
I don’t claim to know everything about football or the jets but I don’t get it…..

Why the F**K are we still talking about this???
If Sanchez is good this is meaningless, if he is bad Tebow won’t win us a SB so it is meaningless.
Either way this is meaningless. Why are we still talking about it??

Ducky says:
The “concern” that people will call for Tebow if Sanchez struggles baffles me. At the very least, it completely ignores what happens when Tebow struggles after he replaces Sanchez. I mean, it is not like Tebow completes more passes that Sanchez, or is a better QB. When Tebow struggles wouldn’t the same fans then call for Sanchez? Under the Fragile Sanchize theory, wherein Sanchez’s whole psyche is dependent on the fan reaction, wouldn’t his confidence then be restored and we’d be right back at zero? It also ignores the fact that the media has been killing Sanchez ever since he came into the league.
This is all a tempest in a teapot with “analysts” who don’t watch the Jets or Sanchez stoking “fans” who are just looking to freak out.
By the way, how many of you get nervous when someone new gets hired at your job? Doesn’t it all seem a little overblown that Sanchez is going to lose his mind because Tebow is on the bench?

I agree 100%. Let’s say the Broncos didn’t win all those games last year, would the same fans who were clamering for Tebow, chant Kyle Orton’s name? And you’re spot on about how the media has never cut Sanchez any slack. I hope that Sanchez gets fired up by this, and works his a** off to prove evreybody wrong!
-
-
spent says:
What scares me a little is that Tebow isn’t going to be out there griding out yards like a running back. Sparano is going to have a handful of gimmicky, trick plays for him that will confuse the heck out of the opposing defense. These plays have the potential for instant scores, but being trick plays, you can’t run them that often. So Tebow might get some quick glory, which I’m afraid the fans will misconstrue as actual football ability. They see him wing a 60 yard TD down field, and all of a sudden they’re thinking, we’ll gosh-dern, they should keep that kid in there all the time if he can do that!
Tebow isn’t a running back. He isn’t a quarterback. He’s a trick pony that you trot out a few times a game. I hope the fans and media can keep that in perspective.

Awesome thread ! I laugh when those who think that lighting a fire under Sanchez will be accomplished by head games and taking away his supporting cast on offense like the jets management did in 2011, will do do the trick. They still havent upgaded the offense!!!! Thats what caused all the controversy in the first place- not building around your qb and giving the circus mentality as the higher priority. The jets should be ashamed of themselves!

Tom in Raleigh says:
Joey, you and I are in agreement again. I am still going to wait and see, but I feel that this is a disastrous move that could potentially rip the team apart…all while we don’t have a second safety, still have no word on the RT and have a few more moves to make before we get a divisive backup QB.
-
joeyboy79 says:
Yeah Tom, I am really apprehensive now. It seems the jets are grasping at straws and it just got worse. I really feel if they would have concentrated on a second deep threat wr, a RT, and a compliment to Green, and then go heavy in the draft on the d side, we would have been moving in the right direction.
This gimmick is worse than Favre! I really think it comes from Woody and his caring more about lining his own wallet than winning the big one.
I have criticized T big time, but after seeing how upset he has looked , I really think its all coming down from woody.
Woody better make his kill now because he will destroy a good qb in Sanchez and no way in heck can Tebow take this team anywhere close to a run. The pats made him look like a joke with a #29 ranked defense!Oh well, time to sit and see what happens, but I am not getting my hopes hope up anymore as I feel this organization has definitely taken the wrong path.

RDubbs says:
I guess I’m firmly in the minority but I think using Tebow about ten times a game in the right situations can be very productive. My initial reaction to the trade was that we gave up too much but considering the Jags were willing to give up a very similar package then maybe not. Still, I would have initially felt a lot better about the deal if it were for a 5th and 6th rather than a 4th and 6th. Spinning Stanton for a 6th certainly helps. But getting back to Tebow’s potential affect on the team. How many people thought that Brad Smith’s plays out of the wildcat were wasted? I know it pissed Sanchez off but so be it. I saw quite a few big plays out of the wildcat two years ago and I see no reason why Tebow can’t be more effective. Granted he is not an NFL caliber quarterback but he certainly can throw better than Smith or LT or Kerley and he is a load to take down. His failures in Denver derived from the fact that he is not an every down qb in the pros. But as a change-of-pace backup I think he brings a lot to the table; a lot for the defense to think about; from the straight dive to the option to the play action pass down field. Unfortunately the key will be if New York fans can realize Tebow’s potential while also keeping in mind his immense shortcomings. Sadly, if and when Sanchez stumbles a bit, which he probably will at some point in the season, then chanting for Tebow will be incredibly counter-productive. Regardless of his shortcomings, Sanchez is on a whole different level as an NFL quarterback than Tebow and always will be. Starting Tebow would be a disaster. He’s not starting material. If New York fans will embrace Tebow’s successes on the field without calling for Sanchez’s head then I think this will work well. But granted that is a big if …

Kyle13 says:
First I’d like to point out that not all Sanchez supporters are necessarily opposed to the Tebow trade. I for one still think Sanchez can be and should be our franchise QB. That being said, I think Sanchez would be a better QB with a better right tackle and an O-line that clicks great together. Getting help at right tackle should only help Sanchez become a better QB. As for Tebow, I was just baffled when I first heard the news. But even being a Sanchez supporter, I don’t necessarily hate the Tebow deal. I loved watching Brad Smith when he was here, so if Tebow is essentially the Brad Smith replacement I’m OK with that. However, I’m staying neutral about my feelings on the Tebow deal until we actually see how it plays out on the field. Everybody can make their opinions about whether they think it will work out or not, but none of that matters until Week 1 when Sanchez and Tebow are playing together. That’s when we’ll know for sure if this was a good trade or not.
-
JetsImpact414 says:
I agree. I too am a Sanchez supporter and I’m not necaccarily apposed to the trade. I just wish that everybody would just stop ignoring the facts about what has gone on during the Sanchez era. I find it amazing how much Sanchez is scrutinized for his play when he does not have the sporting cast to help him become a good QB. Do you realize that besides keller, Sanchez has not have the same WR to throw to the 3 years he has been here. Then the Jets replace a very good ET in Woody for a career backup in Hunter. Then your pro bowl LT forgets how to pass block and your blocking TE is a drive killing penalty machine. So let’s keep questioning if the QB is any good when everyone around him can not do their jobs or have no continuity (WR’s) with their QB because they just got here 2 weeks ago (Burrass, Mason). When the Jets decide to build a team that will be here for more than 2 years and stop all these quick 1 year fixes maybe that is when Sanchez will win a super bowl.

I know you can’t throw out the media craziness and throngs of maniacal Tebow fans that weren’t previously Jets fans but if we could get back Brad Smith for a 4th round pick and a reduced salary I would do it. Smith is more of a threat to go the distance but Tebow is a better (albeit not much better) passer than Smith. Either way if Sparano and Ryan figure out how to use him effectively and Sanchez improves his play then this is a good move. Not the most likely scenario right now with all of the other teem needs but I still think it is an aggressive semi-low risk move that could pay off very well.
-

Let him go to cleveland or Minnesota and ride jnto the sunset as a career backup.

DR24 says:
I agree that we definitely could have used those picks to address bigger needs like RT, FS, or a pass rushing OLB.
I don’t think Tebow is the ideal wildcat QB. The wildcat formation utilizes the single wing alignment with one side overloaded. The best “QB” threat in that situation is someone with sideline-to-sideline quickness, not the brute run you over power running that Tebow has. The threat to throw also helps keep the defense honest, which he will theoretically do better than our other previous wildcat operators, but his throwing techniques still are not that polished. That being said, I didn’t watch Brad Smith enough in college to really say who is/was a better passer.
Also, *holes.
-
GANGGREEN says:
The reason Tebow is here comes down to money.Tebow will put fans in the seats, create media hype every week, and give the Jets a player that most NFL fans will root for.Tebow can make big plays and help on third and short yardage/goal line. Also after all the bad publicity about the Jets locker room Tebow is one of those squeeky clean kids that can clean up this bad publicity.I think Tebow is a born winner,a player with great upside, and has character to lift the dark cloud that the media has put on this Jets team lately.I know there are more glaring concerns for position players on this team but media wise this was a great move to Tanny and Rex to clear up the negatively that has been surrounding the Jets lately.

Longshot says:
Many have said that if Sanchez can’t take this, he’s not a real NFL QB or not the kind of guy we want. These are convenient refrains, but they ignore reality.
Both QBs at this point are here for the season. Tebow can’t run just wildcats or you’re obviously giving the D too much info. So Tebow has to hand off the ball, run the ball and pass in order to keep the D guessing. When Sanchez sees this happening where will his head really be at and what will happen to the 2012 season?
The Tebow move may give the Jets a net plus as far as alternative plays, but a greater net negative as far as effect on the team and key players. This could be a tough one to manage.

The Jets have run the wildcat in the past, it’s not like their going to have to set aside several weeks to learn it. That said, Tebow is a one trick pony. What he brings to the table does not make up for what he’s lacking. Too top it off, you promote him to the second QB? The guy has heart but the con’s outweigh the pro’s.
Aside from that, leading up to grabbing Tebow the Jet’s did nothing with FA picks. That what make’s grabbing Tebow seem all the more foolish. As a rabid and sarcastic Jet fan I’ve got to hope Tanny will pull a rabbit out of his butt, but, IMO, this team, right now, is slightly worse then the team we fielded last year.
-
kane says:
Bent , do you know how many draft positions the jets moved up from the 7th to the 6th from today’s trade with the colts .
-
F 16 says:
P.S. As far as Sanchaz’s feeling… screw his feeling. I don’t care if he cries in his milk every morning as long as he is determined to learn how to command the field. If it takes him looking over his shoulder at Tebow, to turn him into a Pro QB, then the Tebow pick was worth it even if Tebow never takes a snap.
-
Andrew says:
Also the wildcat is less effective when your starting QB is not in the huddle. Also Tebow never ran the wildcat, he runs the read option out of the spread.
Also this idea that it’s “two offenses” is nonsense. If the typical offense has 100 plays, it would be broke down into “pass plays” and “run plays”, and all the derivatives. In NE the playbook has more shotgun, TE screens, and little play action. But its 100 plays.
Our offense would also have 100 plays, and included in the 100 would be broken down “pass plays” “run plays” “wildcat/option plays”. These are professionals, and the option is extremely easy to teach. They aren’t going to be combining two play books. They will formulate one playbook with the majority in pro style, and a few option sprinkled in.

Tebow????? says:
Heres what I see, we now have a backup QB who will be unable to run the offense the 1st team will be working on all preseason and during the week. Brad Smith and kerly in the wildcat were spot players, if Sanchez had gone down Brunel would have run the offense the team was built for. Are they going to be giving valuable practice time to having the offensive 1st unit working on “Tebow’s Offense”? That can’t help, the blocking, routes, timiing is all different.
We don’t have the RB’s that the Bronco’s had , which will allow teams to focus more on Teblow, and they’ve had a whole year to do it.
This whole thing doesn’t look like it was terribly thought out beyond “hey it will generate ticket sales and gimmick plays”. But what do I know, I’m just a guy who spends a sizable chunk of his income on this team, probably a greater % than Woody spends.
-
SackDance99 says:
The Jets RBs are better than Denver’s, the Jets’ OL is better, and Sparano knows how to integrate the Wildcat, which works best with just minor adjustments to the base offense. If Tebow were forced to start, it’s likely that Sparano would have the Jets better prepared for that than almost any other team.

I’d really like to see a formation with Sanchez at QB and Tebow in the backfield with Greene and/or McKnight, Kerley in the slot. There could be all kinds of different misdirections and options. A lateral or backward pass to Tebow, then he looks downfield or takes off. Maybe a reverse and option. All kinds of possibilities and something that Sparano seems could innovate. I honestly think the Jets plan to use both Sanchez and Tebow on the field at the same time which could either fail horribly or be insanely creative and successful.

Very good and and well written article, keep it up!! First off, all you guys are talking about is that Sanchez will struggle all year, what if he come’s out the first game of the season with his pants on fire and prove’s everybody wrong?
-
SackDance99 says:
A few comments. First, how does getting Tebow prevent the Jets from getting any position of perceived need? Why do folks make it sound like upgrading RT is the hardest thing to do in football? Why can’t the Jets address RT in the draft or structurally by using a blocking TE? Second, the shortcomings of RT caused the bulk of Jet woes? Oh, please! Take a look at Sanchez’s awful Pick 6 against the Broncos, perhaps the most pivotal play of the season. Hunter pushes the pass rusher completely out of the frame, Sanchez had all day and inexplicably throws inside and low to a 6-5 WR. Just one of many mental errors by Sanchez that had nothing to do with he OL. How about Mulligan’s penalties and missed blocks? How about Schotty’s perplexing tendency to abandon the run just as its effectiveness was creating problems for the defense? And, how about Sanchez’s holding the ball too long, misreading defenses and losing respect in the locker room? The idea that a QB controversy is always bad is even one of those claims that sounds great, but isn’t borne out by the facts. Last year, the Broncos had a QB controversy, Orton being replaced saved their season. Remember Drew Bledsoe getting injured and losing his starting position to some guy named Brady? How about 2002 with Vinny benched for Chad? QB controversies occur when a starter is injured or struggles and the back up plays better than the starter. Sanchez was an integral part of the offense’s woes last season. Most fans agreed that he didn’t deserve a free ride and needed to be pushed. Tebow will push him not because of his fans, but because he works incredibly hard, is a great teammate and has a different skill set. Plus, he has a history of winning despite his flaws. Sanchez is the more talented QB. But, he has to raise his level of play. At this point, I don’t care who the QB is, I just want wins. Tebow makes the Jets stronger at the back up QB position and brings dynamism to the running game. The offense has been improved and the Jets still have a half dozen draft picks to fill out any other areas of need. In an offense that wasn’t tailored for his skills, Tebow led the Broncos to one of the most improbable playoff runs in NFL history and he overachieved. Sanchez led the Jets to a disappointing season, despite marginal improvements in his stats, and underachieved. I hate to do this, but I’ll quote Proverbs 27:17 again: As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another. Does anyone whose a Jets fan really dispute that Sanchez needs sharpening? As for Tebowmania and the distractions? Last I heard that claim, the Jets were on “Hard Knocks”, their best player was holding out, their best WR was suspended for the first 4 games and their best defensive lineman suffered a season-ending injury. Those distractions led to a 11-5 record and a 2nd consecutive AFC Championship Game appearance. The “controversy” claims are way overblown.

Sanchez needs to step up, true, but like it was mentioned earlier in the posts he has not had any help as far as his receivers go over the years. He has had to deal with new receivers every year, and last year he didnt even have a pre season to get any kind of connection with plax. Not to mention the o-line failed him. This year he has new receivers every again, a new offense to learn, and as of right now the same problems in the oline. As for tebow, im not too worried about it, as far as a backup goes hes pretty decent option. All this it will rip the team apart needs to stop, because as far as we know, nothing has truely changed since last year, and if things do go wrong it doesnt necessarily mean it was due to the addition of tebow. Dont get me wrong, im not a tebow supporter, but hes probably better than stanton. I grow weary of the amount of press surrounding this move, he’s the backup, hes the backup, hes the backup, hes the backup, hes the backup. And one more time, hes the goddamned backup, or i should say the godpraised backup. If sanchez ends up not being the answer, then we had no hope of a superbowl anyway, but the guy is our starter and we will all be watching him anyway. We do however need to address at least one more position in the FA, most likely WR, hopefully OT as well. All that being said im still very excited about the draft, which i think will be our best in the past few years, and im excited about the upcoming season. I feel we really have only made upgrades to the team so far with more to come, and with where we ended up last year, it to feels like like we are back in the playoffs. Enjoy the offseason, wait til the jets get wiped before you flush them, otherwise you’ll just be choking on your own pessimism.

Sanchez will have Tone, Kerley, Keller and Turner back and, if Braylon shows he’s healthy, he’ll be intimately familiar with all of his receivers, except for Schilens. The OL failed Sanchez as much as Sanchez failed the OL. I gave Sanchez a pass because Schotty sucked. I’m just tired of excuses. Many QBs in the NFL have succeeded with far less. It’s time for Sanchez to perform better. And, if he doesn’t, Tebow can run he spread option and the Jets can try to run and play defense into a playoff run. If the Jets make the playoffs anything can happen. But, the Jets’ best chance for a long run is Sanchez meeting the challenge. And, I think he will. But, just claiming that Tebow will be a distraction and hurt Sanchez is, if anything, very disrespectful to Sanchez and rank speculation.

When the Beatles came to America everyone was saying “what a gimmick”. Even Paul said that in their first interview here. “Everyone thinks we’re a gimmick with the hair and all, but we dont think we’re a gimmick”. Then people saw them on the Ed Sullivan show and you never heard “gimmick” again. This Tebow is a great athlete, not a gimmick and if he’s used properly, just like with the Beatles, people will shut up fast when they see what he can do for the Jets. This guy has real belief in himself and I pray his attitude is contagious. That’s optimism, but what’s wrong with that?

There is way too much drama going on over this move. If the Jets had traded a 4th round pick to bring Brad Smith back no one would be thinking twice about it. We needed someone to fill that role and Tebow may be the best person ever to do it (ok, he doesn’t return kickoffs like Smith, but everything else he does better). There is plenty of time to fill the other needs through the draft, free agency, waiver wire pickups and trades. Relax and celebrate this for what it is — a shot at having something really incredible happen with no real risk.

Clean Sanchez says:
They really only gave up one pick. The other one was just downgraded one round, not given up entirely.

And, I think the Jets’ bench is better than is being portrayed, so there could be quality replacements already on the roster.

This is trade makes no sense. This was driven by Our great owner woody johnson who rather have the back pages then win. I’m for sure want a chip and it will not happening with a two quarterback system.

Tanny instead should have built our defense up and shore up our right tackle mess.

Any Jet fans here honestly believe Drew Stanton is a better backup QB than Tim Tebow?
Why are everyone assuming Tebow will take Sanchez’s starting job? Isn’t there some chance that Tim Tebow is here to be a) the backup QB b) the wildcat QB c) in tandem with Shonn Greene at RB d) the other TE in 2 TE sets? Those responsibilities combined will make him almost a starter to pacify his legions of fans. Why hate on Tebow? He is now one of us.

PS
The way I saw him hit people last year, he could even take over Bart Scott’s job. He certainly tackles much better than Cromartie.

Hahah you guys are still going at it pathetic. Don’t
Let the whining losers goad you. Some people will be miserable their whole lives…just hope they don’t have children;) ..
There’s no common. Sense or fandom…it’s three maybe four whiners talking ( and changing user names) and the rest of us defending our position and trying to get them to feel better ..either their troll fans of other teams…or clinically depressed and borderline dangerous. Either way you might as well try and stop a dog from licking his own balls you’re not going to convince any of them ..done here..go jets!
