There’s a great article over at Turn On the Jets about Jets West, in which Joe Caporoso (rightfully) zigs while everyone zags in his writing about Tebow attending Jets West via Mark Sanchez’s invite.
Things like Jets West were part of the reason it was laughable when anonymous sources questioned Sanchez’s work ethic and leadership. Since day one of joining the team, Sanchez has reportedly been the first one in the building and the last one out. Recently, newly hired offensive coordinator noted that he has been the team’s hardest worker on offense and has mastered the offense in the classroom already.
[...]
This year’s camp will be a chance for Sanchez to further instruct his teammates on Sparano’s offense, which he began learning well before anybody else on the team when he went out of his way to train with Chad Pennington. Yes, the lazy Sanchez tracked Pennington down on his own and took multiple trips down to Florida to learn his new offense before OTAs began. His early knowledge will pay off in a situation like Jets West, where he could instruct his fellow skill position players and work towards developing chemistry with them.
I can understand if teammates feel like Sanchez gets special attention or might be “coddled” compared to them, but then when a QB comes out of school early, starts his very first NFL game and has the support of the organization behind him from so early a point in the game’s most important position, you can understand why players would be skeptical of his abilities and the treatment he might get within Florham Park.
With that said, it’s obvious as Joe points out that Sanchez is a dedicated offseason worker, that he goes well above and beyond to make himself and the team better. Is his work good enough for him to be a great franchise QB for the next ten years? I think we’re going to find out a lot this season … but Caporoso is right, Jets West should be about Sanchez and what he offers the team not the obvious fact that he is inviting his backup QB to attend the workouts.

That was terrible lol. Was Stephen A. suggesting that Sanchez lured Tebow out west to subject him to the temptation of women and such? I hope he was joking

I’m so excited for this season. I absolutely cannot wait for Sanchez to shut everyone up.

That title is annoying. Who would suggest something like that is a bottom-feeder. It existed before Tebow, and his relevance in the NFL. Why such a conception?
-
miketaliaferro says:
Just about everyone in sports media (except, maybe, Jenny V. Jane) are bottom-feeders. To answer your question: It’s the only conception their peabrains could concoct.

Jenny is one of the best—if not the best—football reporters we have. Almost all the rest (except for Jane) are unreliable, know nothing about football, and aren’t worth reading (like Cimini, Florio, Gary Myers, Peter King, and on and on and on).

Now this is a story worth linking to (even though I had already seen it)—Joe Caporoso is one of the best Jets bloggers around.

It’s like they want Sanchez to chaperon and bw to the noble media’s eye. What kind of nonsense is this? Well, it would make the JETS WEST program much more attractive to known players on the team, but

I had a bad, 8-and-8 feeling going into last season. I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what was bothering me, but I could feel a down season coming. And it did.
This year feels great!

Huh? A reasonable article?

Jeff says:
Are you kidding, Bassett? Am I hallucinating or are you the one who, less than 24 hours ago, put up a post with the exact opposite message–that Jets West was important because Tim Tebow was going to be there? And then, apparently, you took that post down. And now your headline is “Jets West is About Sanchez’s Leadership, Not Tebow’s Media Appeal.” Wow! Talk about flip-flopping. Well, at least you got it right this time.

I am a Sanchez supporter , for all the things that wrong last year, much of it must be laid at the feet of management . Management allowed much of Sanchez help on offence go. From Braylon and Cotchery to Smith, along with allowing a career backup to start at RT. Who graded out as one of the worse and losing Mangold for 3 game didn’t help the Jets out either. Compound it’s all with an OC who in his finest year had the 18th ranked offence in the league. I don’t excuse his bad year, but much of the blame lies elsewhere. I believe Sanchez will bounce back, and only one thing bothers me RT, especially in light of the fact that recienly Couples beat Hunter badly for a sack. Let’s hope it is not an omen of things to come.
-
miketaliaferro says:
You left out that poor semi-pro kid they signed to cover the snap when Mangold got hurt. He tried his best, but was beaten to a pulp until Nick returned early, obviously still hurt. Then, they cut the kid. I hope, at least, they said ‘Thanks!’ as they pushed him out the door. That was Tanny’s whole approach to ‘depth’ after Turner got hurt last year.

To be a leader it takes more than holding a week long camp for your teammates in your hometown. When i wwatch him play i dont see a leader. I see a scared boy playing with men. Maybe sanchez invites tebow to teach him how to be a leader? Undortunately, that will take much longer than a week

a57se says:
Hey Pete, how’s it going?
-
Zenlaw says:
Let’s assume for a second that Sanchez is able to play well enough to keep his starting job throughout this upcoming season.
Pete, what will it take from Sanchez for you to abandon your dislike? What stats, win percentage, QB rating or whatever do you need to see?

Brendan says:
The “scared boy playing with men” comment is the one I take the most issue with. He’s not a little kid, he is a man himself. A little kid’s torso would have ripped clean off if Von Miller hit him the way he hit Sanchez.
I guess you missed all the comments about how Sanchez is still the hardest worker on the team, and he’s still the leader of the offense, and so on?

I really don’t understand why everyone is so defensive about Sanchez’s leadership abilities!!
If Sanchez is really the leader every Sanchez supporter thinks he is, then why do they feel they must defend him almost daily???
-
Brian Serviss says:
it’s not defending it’s calling out people’s idiotic opinions like yours and petes

Brendan says:
Why do people feel the need to “almost daily” say Sanchez isn’t a leader despite every interview saying the opposite?

BillyHo says:
What worries me is whether Sanchez can be a consistent leader. I will always remember what Trent Dilfer said about him being the alpha of all alphas when he was doing a pre-draft interview or something with Stafford, Freeman and maybe one other QB. I do feel he is certainly a social leader in that he’s great at getting everyone together and likes taking control. However, being a leader on the field of battle, faced with extreme adversity is an entirely different thing.
I agree and disagree with Pete B. At times he does look like a scared boy among men but there have been times where he’s looked stone cold, calm and under control when under extreme pressure. The problem with Sanchez has always been consistency. Let’s hope he rises to the occasion this year.
P.S. This is off topic but anyone see MIB 3 yet? There’s a scene in the beginning where a “bad” alien is wearing a Sanchez jersey and Jets hat and gets blasted by Will Smith. I’m not sure whether that’s good or bad brand exposure.

I’m a sanchez believer and supporter, but comments like these always make me wonder why, given that he is such a hard worker and obviously not lazy, he often seems to have such a hard time reading defenses and adjusting his reads to the coverages. Let’s hope a lot of it was shotty’s over complicated schemes and erratic playcalling as well as an inadequate support system (refferring to the players on O last year) around him.
-
Ajitator says:
Take into account 2 of your 3 starting receivers are trying to learn the complexity of the plays and you can easily see how the flow of the offense can be thrown off.
I’ll be the first to admit i’ve seen him make some really boneheaded decisions, but I’d imagine that in some cases Sanchez was making the right reads, just not on the same page with his receiver, Which can make a decent throw become a really bad decision.

Harvlis says:
I think it is an important move, to have Tebow attend Jets West. He is the back-up QB. If Sanchez gets hurt, after posting a 12-2 season, should he want an unprepared Tebow to lose the last two and fold in the playoffs. No. He should want Tebow to step in and seamlessly finish the season, so that his team ends up with a ring, his hard work pays off, and he gets a share of SB winnings. Besides, he will be handing off, pitching the ball, and throwing to Tebow this year. The media has nothing better to do than stir the pot. Don’t fall for the hype.

bradysucks says:
If Sanchez is such a great leader then why was it such a disaster when he was a team captain? How did captain Sanchez work out? It is impossible to be a leader when other players in the locker room don’t respect the way you play on the field. I get the fan support for Mark because he is the qb for the team. But Mark the leader? He did Jets West last year and nobody thought he was a leader. I guess he is a great leader in the off season but that is about it until he plays better.
-
Brendan says:
Seriously? Your argument on why he’s not a leader is the entire team imploded?
What about…Sione Pouha? Would you question his leadership? He was a captain.
